Milltown is a pleasant little village situated on the
upper reaches of the Clare River, on the N17 between Tuam,
Co Galway, and Claremorris in Co Mayo. It is noted for its
trout and salmon fishing. The local Development Association
won the 1991 Ireland West Tourism Environmental Quality
Award for the restoration of the old mill tank and the
provision of a 550 meter river walk. In 2000, this project
won 1st place in the "Waterside Award" in the National Tidy
Towns Competition.
Milltown now boasts one of the finest Heritage Parks in the
West of Ireland, which includes amenity area, children's
playground, picnic areas, and it adjoins the Clare River
Walk and a 4.5km Sli-Na-Sláinte scenic rural walk. The
village usually features prominently in the National Tidy
Towns Competition.
